Relay Attacks, Key Cloning, and Why Your Car Is Less Safe Than You Think

Today's car thieves are faster, quieter, and they don't need your keys. In many cases, your car is driven away in under 60 seconds without a single window broken or alarm triggered.

What Is a Relay Attack?
A relay attack exploits the keyless entry system built into most modern cars. Your key fob constantly broadcasts a low-power signal so the car can detect it when you're nearby. That's how the door unlocks as you approach, or starts without you pressing anything.
Thieves work in pairs. One stands near your front door — or wherever your keys are kept inside — with a relay device. It picks up the faint signal from your fob through the wall. The second person stands next to your car with a matching device that amplifies that signal and tricks the car into thinking the key is right there. The car unlocks. The engine starts. They're gone.
The whole thing takes less than a minute, and there's no forced entry. Your insurance might not even pay out because there's no sign of break-in.
What Is Key Cloning?
Key cloning is a different method, usually used when a thief gets brief access to your key — a valet, a dodgy locksmith, or a moment of opportunity. Specialist kit reads the transponder chip in your key and writes an identical copy onto a blank. The clone works exactly like the original.
It's less common than relay attacks but harder to detect, since nothing unusual shows up on the car's records.
OBD Port Hacking
The OBD (On-Board Diagnostics) port sits under your dashboard and is used by garages to plug in diagnostic tools. Thieves know this. Using cheap, widely available hardware, they can plug into the OBD port, programme a blank key directly from the car's ECU, and drive away — all without the original key ever leaving your house.
This is particularly common on Toyota, BMW, and Land Rover models. Getting into the car to reach the OBD port is the only real hurdle, which is why a secondary layer of security matters.
What Actually Stops It
Ghost 2 Immobiliser

You set a unique PIN sequence using the buttons already on your car — steering wheel, door controls, dashboard. Without entering that sequence in the right order, the engine won't start. Full stop.

Thatcham Tracker
A tracker won't stop the theft, but if the worst happens, it gives you and the police a real chance of recovery. A Thatcham-approved Category 5 or 6 tracker with driver recognition is the standard worth going for. Most insurers require Thatcham approval for high-value vehicles.

What Doesn't Work
Steering wheel locks look the part. They're a visual deterrent, nothing more. A thief who's just bypassed your car's entire ECU isn't going to be put off by a bright yellow bar. Same goes for standard factory alarms — they're well understood, easily defeated, and most people ignore them anyway.
If your only protection is the alarm your car came with, you're relying on the thief choosing an easier target. That's not a strategy.
