How Often Should I Get My Car Detailed?

There's no single right answer to this one — it depends on your car, how you use it, and what result you're after. But after 20 years of detailing cars across Worthing and West Sussex, I can tell you what actually works and what's overkill.

Here's a practical guide.

The Difference Between a Maintenance Wash and a Full Detail

First, it's worth separating these two things, because a lot of people use "detail" to mean very different things.

A maintenance wash keeps the car clean, protects the existing paintwork, and stops contamination building up. Done regularly, it's what keeps your car looking fresh day to day.

A full detail — or full valet — is a deeper clean. Interior and exterior, proper decontamination, dressing all the trim, windows cleaned inside and out. It restores the car rather than just maintaining it.

Both have their place. The frequency of each is different.

Maintenance Wash: Every 2–4 Weeks

If you want your car to stay in good condition, a proper wash every two to four weeks is the minimum. Longer than that and you're letting contamination — road grime, bird droppings, tree sap, industrial fallout — sit on the paint and start doing damage.

Bird droppings in particular are highly acidic. Leave them long enough and they'll etch into the clear coat. I've seen cars brought in where the owner thought the marks would wash off — they didn't, because they'd been sitting there for weeks.

If your car has a ceramic coating, maintenance becomes easier — the hydrophobic surface means dirt doesn't bond as readily — but you still need to wash it regularly.

Full Valet: Every 3–6 Months

A full interior and exterior valet every three to six months is what I'd recommend for most cars. This is when you get into the details — the door shuts, the boot seal, the plastics dressed and cleaned properly, the interior genuinely deep cleaned rather than just hoovered.

For cars used daily in all weather, lean towards three months. For weekend or occasional cars, twice a year is fine.

Machine Polish: Once a Year, or When Needed

Machine polishing removes the fine swirl marks and scratches that build up in the clear coat over time. If your car's finish is starting to look hazy or dull, especially in direct sunlight, that's the sign you need a polish.

For most people, once a year is about right. If the car has a ceramic coating and is being maintained well, you may be able to push this further.

Before Special Events: Any Time

This one's simple. If you're taking the car to a show, selling it, picking someone up, or just want it looking its absolute best — book a detail. You don't need a reason beyond "I want my car to look brilliant."

At Juicy Car Care I do a lot of show prep and pre-sale details. A car that's been properly detailed will always present better, and in the case of a sale, it genuinely affects what people are willing to pay.

What Happens If You Don't Detail Regularly?

Neglect accumulates. What starts as surface grime becomes bonded contamination. Swirls compound. Leather dries out and starts to crack. Trim fades. None of it is catastrophic on its own, but by the time you notice it's bad, you're looking at a lot more work — and cost — to put right.

Regular maintenance is always cheaper than a correction job down the line.

What's Right for Your Car?

Here's a quick rule of thumb:

  • Daily driver, all weather — wash every 2 weeks, full valet every 3 months

  • Daily driver, mostly dry — wash every 3–4 weeks, full valet every 4–6 months

  • Weekend/occasional car — wash monthly, full valet twice a year

  • Show car or high-value vehicle — regular maintenance washes, full detail before events
